RECREATION AND CULTURAL CENTER

The old San Isidro Sugar Factory is one of the city's renowned but overlooked architectures.

The operation reworks the existing heritage. Its horizontality underscores the topographic conditions of this area: a layer that is scarcely raised off the ground to encourage the relationship between the new and old elements. The landscapes concept arises from the relationship between the old architecture, the new architecture and the natural environment. The project returns repeatedly to the idea of horizontality, a transitory flotation line common to the image of the agricultural platforms on the river flat, with their irregular heights in the crops and colors that change with the seasons. Redefining the use of the silos and charcoal furnaces is quite appropriate is this agricultural/ industrial context, where the expansion lines of the natural environment coexist with the industrial architecture. The traditional concept of what is usually understood as 'building' disappears, to situate a level in the territory that coincides with the infrastructures at the rear of the factory. The new topography will be formed using organic matter from the river flats, changing with the seasons and the weather.

We aim to construct a recreation and cultural complex over a 100,000 m² are, agglutinating a broad cross-section of the public with a large, varied range of options. The old factory constructions are for fashion, music and restaurant, as well as games and recreation zone and other sports areas. The unit will be accompanied by 18 cinemas with different sizes and capacity. The difficulties of the project have consisted of drawing all of these ideas in towards the original idea of the site, avoiding the insertion of an architectural object that could change the natural character of the surrounding.

Set beside the rear facade of the San Isidro factory, the cinema complex adapts to the irregular line of the stone wall of the charcoal furnace and the pulp silos. The relationship with the factory is forged by a passageway raised to 3.52 meters which defines the plane of the operation, form where the main cinema entrances is produced through a 20 meter wide excavated patio. The exit is through the gallery that emerges from inside the cinemas to the main factory entrance and ramp that leads outside.
