URBAN ILLUSIONS

House for a magician, Granada

Magic turns fantasy into fact, and involves a common fact of extraordinary events. A house for a magician is a mysterious space as is his top hat or trunk, in which illusion and secrets form a part of an indivisible daily reality. To see a magician in action is a fascinating experience, one witnesses naturally inexplicable situations, things never seen that are illogical. With magic it is possible, for example, to make a reality the dream of a house simultaneously containing several styles from different eras; or better still, different houses that converge in a single one. We imagine a space in the historical city which we could conveniently enter from different buildings, moving between these unrelated structures. The result would be an architecture connected by temporary rooms that as in the original "time traveler" allows us to decide at every moment the desired occupation.

In order to carry out this idea, three nearby existing styles of architecture were chosen corresponding to three houses from different eras, one from the end of the 19th century, another historical one from 1920, and the last one, from 1975, pertaining to the developed stage. Each of them has a space reserved on the ground floor, and symbolically they represent a threshold of times that forma sequence of different entrances that transports us to a newly built fourth house. The connection among them takes place through a series of underground connections, absurd labyrinths that transport us in time. Three passages that end at the same place or in different places and that only make sense seen as a whole. We can enter the room from the 19th century or move forward and back as if we were in a time tunnel. The four chosen houses refer to four times in the history of the city, four doors lead us to four spaces with different characteristics, as the four cards from a deck of cards.
