FLOORLESS PATIO HOUSE

Barranco del Abogado, Granada

The inhabitants of this house are a young couple who chose the site on account of its magnificent views across the city and the unique steep ravine setting of the plot. Due to its difficult topography, on an angle of more than 70%, this allotment is the only void remaining unoccupied in a dense, compact urban fabric. From the outset, the inhabitants proposed a different lifestyle, with wide-ranging programmes including gastronomic and cinema activities, areas for meeting and parties, and even the possibility of a place in the house to receive and accommodate friends for a time.

The proposal emerged by relating the activities to certain positions of the terrain and the landscape. The choice of two differentiated positions at the highest and lowest points of the allotment generated a house that draws together the architectural styles that have built up this district over time. Patio houses, houses between party walls, lookout houses and cave houses all common domestic solutions in this step, densely occupied urban environment. The aim was to bring together all the possible types of architecture without altering the existing ravine topography.

The result is a strange zigzag shape attached at the top and bottom ends to the party walls of the neighboring buildings with a tree-strewn garden that spreads across the allotment between the bends. The different architectural types emerge in harmony with the slope angle, with programmes and routes adapted to different situations: the floorless patio house is at the highest point, cantilevering out and detached from the ground. It has a garden-lookout on the roof and a platform where the car can be left. A curved interior patio provides views of the drop when visitors enter the main area of the house. The area for friends is set at the lowest level, in a patio house between the party walls, adapted in scale and proportion to the adjacent buildings.

The entrance to the house here is for pedestrians, produced by perforating an old wall that channeled the rainwater in the ravine. A staircase integrated into a structure that descends the slope, and also a recessed lift with a ramp-gallery connect the main house area to the rooms for friends, who can either enjoy the outdoor walk across a platform of water and shade, or directly penetrate through the topography. A cave prolongs the relationship between the house and the land.

Two intersected curves generate the exterior shape of the patio and the interior form of the living room. The relationship between the two figures configures the curved patio and the interior space of the house. The interior wrapper is extradosed on top of the face concrete used to shape the stairway and the elliptical skylight inserted into the lookout-roof garden.

The roof is a lookout-garden with topography and a platform for the vehicle entrance to the house. This area is used for different types of activities, depending on the time of year. On sunny winter days it is a solarium, and on summer nights it is a place for stargazing and meeting with friends. A series of volumes with different shapes and geometries emerge from the ground to store water and hold the equipment and infrastructure required for the activities. An elliptical skylight emerges in the garden to feed top lighting into the interior spaces of the house.
